Short answer, verified 1 September 2026: one finished minute of ElevenLabs narration costs $0.180 on Starter and $0.148 on Pro and Business, the cheapest monthly plans per minute. The same model billed through the API is $0.090 a minute, and the Flash model is $0.045. Every subscription tier is a worse price per character than the API. Those figures use 899 characters per finished minute, which we measured across 280,485 characters of narration we actually shipped, rather than the round 1,000 that every other page assumes.
| Way to buy | Cost per finished minute | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Pro plan, monthly | $0.148 | $99 a month for 600,000 credits |
| Pro plan, annual billing | $0.124 | $82.50 a month equivalent, billed as ten months |
| API, v2 or v3 | $0.090 | $0.10 per 1,000 characters, pay as you go |
| API, Flash or Turbo | $0.045 | $0.05 per 1,000 characters, pay as you go |
This page is about ElevenLabs and one question: what does a minute of finished audio cost. If you want the wider category, including what we run instead, read Best AI Voice Generators in 2026.
Why every other answer is a range
Google’s AI Overview for this query, captured on 31 August 2026, answers “about $0.06 to $0.30 per minute”. That is a five-fold spread, and it is a five-fold spread for a reason: ElevenLabs sells credits, credits are spent per character, and nobody publishing on this topic knows how many characters a minute of speech actually is. So they guess 1,000 and hedge the rest.
ElevenLabs guesses the same. Its API pricing page prints $0.10 per 1,000 characters and labels it “~$0.10/minute”, which only holds if your narrator reads 1,000 characters a minute. Ours does not.
The number this page is built on: 899 characters per finished minute
We produce long-form narrated video every week, so the corpus already existed. Across 15 narration scripts we shipped, totalling 50,237 words and 280,485 characters, the arithmetic is:
| Measurement | Value | How it was obtained |
|---|---|---|
| Characters per word | 5.583 | 280,485 characters divided by 50,237 words |
| Reading rate | 161 words per minute | measured on the narration voice we ship with, in production |
| Characters per finished minute | 899 | 5.583 characters per word times 161 words per minute |
The consequence runs in ElevenLabs’ favour, which is worth saying plainly because this page is otherwise critical of its pricing: at 899 characters a minute rather than 1,000, a minute of narration costs about 10 percent less than the vendor’s own round number implies. If your delivery is faster than 161 words per minute, your minute costs more than the figures below. Measure your own rate before you budget: synthesize 200 words, time it, and divide.
Cost per finished minute, every plan
ElevenLabs states on its pricing page that for V2 Multilingual models, one text character equals one credit. That rule plus the credit allowance plus 899 characters a minute gives one number per plan, with no range.
| Plan | Monthly | Credits a month | Minutes of v2 audio | Per 1,000 credits | Per minute, monthly | Per minute, annual |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | Free | 10,000 | 11 | n/a | no commercial licence | n/a |
| Starter | $6 | 30,000 | 33 | $0.2000 | $0.180 | $0.150 |
| Creator | $22 | 121,000 | 135 | $0.1818 | $0.163 | $0.136 |
| Pro | $99 | 600,000 | 667 | $0.1650 | $0.148 | $0.124 |
| Scale | $299 | 1,800,000 | 2,002 | $0.1661 | $0.149 | $0.124 |
| Business | $990 | 6,000,000 | 6,674 | $0.1650 | $0.148 | $0.124 |
The spread across paid plans is narrow. Starter at $6 a month is $0.180 a minute, and Pro at $99 a month is $0.148. That is 21 percent off the unit price for more than 16 times the monthly commitment, and it is the whole discount available: Business at $990 lands on the same $0.148. You are not buying a better unit price as you climb. You are buying volume, seats and features.
Annual billing is the one lever that moves the unit price meaningfully. ElevenLabs bills a year as ten months, so the same Pro minute falls from $0.148 to $0.124, a cut of 17 percent.
The API is cheaper per minute than every plan
| Model | Price per 1,000 characters | Cost per finished minute | Against the cheapest plan minute ($0.148) |
|---|---|---|---|
| v3 | $0.10 | $0.090 | 1.65x cheaper |
| v3 Conversational | $0.05 | $0.045 | 3.30x cheaper |
| v2 Multilingual | $0.10 | $0.090 | 1.65x cheaper |
| Flash / Turbo | $0.05 | $0.045 | 3.30x cheaper |
The cheapest subscription minute is 1.65 times the same model on the API and 3.30 times the Flash model. On annual billing the gap narrows but does not close: $0.124 is still 1.38 times the API rate for identical output.
The honest scope of that claim: a subscription is not only minutes. It buys the Studio editor, instant and professional voice cloning, workspace seats and a commercial licence, none of which the pay-as-you-go API rate includes in the same form. The claim is narrow and it is arithmetic: per minute of finished audio, the plan is the expensive way to buy it. If your workload is narration and nothing else, you are paying a premium for a dashboard you may not open.
ElevenLabs says as much itself on the Business plan card, which advertises “Low-latency TTS as low as 5c/minute”. That is the Flash model, and $0.045 a minute is what our own conversion gives for it.
The $11 that is really $22
Scrape the ElevenLabs pricing page as text and the Creator plan reads $11 a month. Render it in a real browser with the monthly toggle applied and the card says $22 a month, with “first month 50% off, $11” printed above it. The vendor’s own plan calculator recommends Creator and prints the same $11 in the headline slot with $22 struck alongside.
So any page quoting $11 as the Creator price copied a promotional banner rather than a price. The recurring cost is $22 a month, which is what the per-minute figures on this page use. We check prices in a rendered browser for exactly this reason.
Two ElevenLabs pages disagree about what a plan includes
This is the finding we did not expect. The plans page says a Creator plan includes 121,000 credits a month, and the same page’s FAQ says one v2 character is one credit. The API pricing page, on the same day, prints a row called “Characters included” and puts 220,000 against Creator for both v2 Multilingual and v3.
| Plan | Monthly | Credits, per the plans page | “Characters included”, per the API page | Ratio | Plan price divided by the v2 API rate |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $6 | 30,000 | 60,000 | 2.00x | 60,000 characters |
| Creator | $22 | 121,000 | 220,000 | 1.82x | 220,000 characters |
| Pro | $99 | 600,000 | 990,000 | 1.65x | 990,000 characters |
| Scale | $299 | 1,800,000 | 2,990,000 | 1.66x | 2,990,000 characters |
| Business | $990 | 6,000,000 | 9,900,000 | 1.65x | 9,900,000 characters |
The last column explains the second figure: the API page’s “characters included” is the plan price divided by the $0.10 per 1,000 character API rate, to the exact character. It is a statement of what your money would buy at API rates, not of what the plan grants you. Read as an allowance, it overstates every paid plan, by 1.65x to 2.00x.

We are not calling that deceptive, and we cannot test what a real account is granted without buying every tier. What we can say is that the two pages do not agree on the same day, so check the credit balance in your dashboard in the first billing cycle rather than budgeting from the API page. This is the sort of thing buyers notice: “even their own reps do not understand it” (r/ElevenLabs), wrote one long-time customer about the credit model.
Scale costs more per credit than Pro
$0.1650 per 1,000 credits on Pro against $0.1661 on Scale. Paying $200 a month more moves the unit price 0.7 percent in the wrong direction.
That is not a mistake on their part and it is not a large sum. It is worth knowing because volume discounts are the default assumption when climbing a price ladder, and here there is none. Scale buys 3 workspace seats, team collaboration and 3 times the credit headroom. If you want a cheaper minute, Scale is not it. Business returns to $0.1650, the same unit price as Pro.
The shared credit pool: where it costs nearly 15 times the API
Credits are not narration credits. ElevenLabs states that every product draws on one pool, so transcription, dubbing, music and voice conversion all spend the same budget your narration does. Priced at the best credit rate on the ladder ($0.1650 per 1,000, the Pro and Business rate), that pool converts as follows.
| Product | Credit cost | Cost at the Pro credit rate | Credits against the pay-as-you-go API rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text to speech | 1 per character | $0.1650 per 1,000 characters | $0.10 per 1,000 characters, so credits are 1.65x the API |
| Speech to text | 330 per minute | $0.0545 per minute | $0.22 per hour against $3.27 in credits, so credits are 14.8x the API |
| Music | 900 per minute | $0.1485 per minute | $0.15 per minute, so credits are 0.99x the API |
| Voice Changer or Voice Isolator | 1,000 per minute | $0.1650 per minute | $0.12 per minute, so credits are 1.38x the API |
| Dubbing, automatic with watermark | 2,000 per minute | $0.3300 per minute | $0.33 per minute, so credits are 1.00x the API |
| Dubbing, automatic without watermark | 3,000 per minute | $0.4950 per minute | no comparable API rate |
| Dubbing Studio with watermark | 5,000 per minute | $0.8250 per minute | no comparable API rate |
| Dubbing Studio without watermark | 10,000 per minute | $1.6500 per minute | no comparable API rate |
| Sound Effects | 200 per generation | $0.0330 per generation | no comparable API rate |
Transcription is the line to look at twice. An hour of speech to text spends 19,800 credits, which is $3.27 of a Pro allowance, against $0.22 an hour on the API: 14.8 times the price for the same model. On Starter it is 18.0 times. If you transcribe at any volume, do it on an API key or on a local model such as faster-whisper, and keep the plan credits for the work only the plan can do.
The pool is not uniformly bad value. Dubbing at the automatic watermarked rate lands on its API price to the cent, and music comes in fractionally under. It is specifically poor for text to speech and severe for transcription, which are the two products most people buy this for.
What happens to credits you do not spend
Unused credits roll over for up to two months, capped at three times the monthly quota. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits them. Rollover does not apply to the Free plan. That last clause is the one that costs money: a balance built up over two quiet months is forfeited by the act of downgrading, so the cheaper plan is not cheaper in the month you switch. Spend down first, then downgrade.
The credit model is the single loudest complaint in the ElevenLabs community. One user, unable to buy credits without changing plan, wrote “I just paid $57 and still cannot use it” (r/ElevenLabs). A reply makes the fair counterpoint that usage-based billing is buying more credits, only metered. Both things are true, and both are reasons to know your per-minute number before you pick a tier.
What we pay for narration, and the arithmetic behind it
Our own narration line item is $0 a month. We run a local text to speech stack and a free system voice, and we moved to it after shipping with paid alternatives. That is a production decision, not a recommendation for everyone, and the numbers make the trade legible:
| Our corpus | Figure |
|---|---|
| Narration shipped | 15 scripts, 280,485 characters |
| Finished audio | 312 minutes |
| Cost on the v2 API | $28.05 |
| Cost on the Flash API | $14.02 |
| Cost on one month of Pro | $99 |
| Pro allowance left unused | 53 percent |
| What we actually paid | $0 |
Read that table the right way round. It does not say ElevenLabs is overpriced. It says our workload is flat narration at moderate volume, which is the workload a free local engine handles, and that at 280,485 characters a single Pro month would have left 53 percent of the allowance unspent. Buying a plan for a workload that fits inside pay as you go is the most common way to overpay here.
If you want the open-source side of that comparison properly, VoxCPM and GPT-SoVITS are the two we would try first, and our voice generator guide covers where paying is still the right call. Paid alternatives worth pricing against ElevenLabs are Murf AI and WellSaid Labs.
How we verified these numbers
- Plan prices, credit allowances and seat counts were read from https://elevenlabs.io/pricing in a real browser on 1 September 2026, with the monthly toggle applied. Text scraping this page returns the promotional price, not the recurring one.
- Credit rules, per-product credit costs, rollover terms and annual pricing come from the FAQ accordions on the same page, expanded and read on 1 September 2026.
- API rates were read from https://elevenlabs.io/pricing/api on 1 September 2026.
- Characters per finished minute is our own measurement across 280,485 characters of shipped narration, not an estimate.
- Every per-minute and per-hour figure on this page is arithmetic on those inputs, computed at build time from a single fact file rather than typed.
- Anything we could not verify against an ElevenLabs page was cut rather than hedged. That includes the subscription-side credit multiplier for Flash and Turbo, so the plan figures here use the v2 rule of one credit per character and are therefore the ceiling, not the floor, for Flash work on a plan.
Prices change. This page carries the date it was verified, and we re-check it on a schedule. If a figure here disagrees with the vendor today, the vendor is right and we want to know.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest price for ElevenLabs?
The cheapest paid plan is Starter at $6 a month for 30,000 credits, or $5 a month equivalent on annual billing, verified 1 September 2026. There is a free tier at 10,000 credits a month, but it carries no commercial licence. The cheapest way to buy audio is not a plan at all: pay as you go on the Flash API is $0.05 per 1,000 characters, which is $0.045 per finished minute at our measured 899 characters a minute.
Is ElevenLabs expensive?
Per finished minute it is $0.148 at best on a monthly plan and $0.124 on annual billing, against $0.090 for the identical model on the API. So the plans are 1.65 times the price of the output they produce, and the extra buys Studio, voice cloning, seats and a commercial licence. Whether that is expensive depends entirely on whether you use those. For narration alone, it is.
How much does ElevenLabs Scribe cost?
$0.22 per hour on the API for Scribe v2, and $0.39 per hour for Scribe v2 Realtime, verified 1 September 2026. Through a subscription it is a different price: speech to text spends 330 credits a minute, which is $3.27 an hour of a Pro allowance, about 15 times the API rate. Use the API for transcription.
How many characters is one minute of ElevenLabs audio?
ElevenLabs and most articles assume 1,000. We measured 899 across 280,485 characters of narration we shipped, at a 161 words per minute delivery. The figure moves with your reading rate, so measure your own: synthesize 200 words, time the result, and divide characters by minutes.
Why does the ElevenLabs Creator plan show $11?
Because the card carries a promotion: first month 50% off, $11. The recurring price is $22 a month, verified in a rendered browser on 1 September 2026. Pages that quote $11 as the Creator price have read a promotional banner rather than the plan price.
Do unused ElevenLabs credits roll over?
Unused credits roll over for up to two months, capped at three times the monthly quota. Downgrading or cancelling forfeits them. Rollover does not apply to the Free plan. Verified on the pricing page FAQ on 1 September 2026. The practical trap is downgrading with a balance built up, which forfeits it at the end of that cycle.
Is the ElevenLabs API cheaper than a subscription?
Per character, yes, on every tier. The best plan rate is $0.1650 per 1,000 characters against $0.10 on the v2 API and $0.05 on Flash, verified 1 September 2026. A subscription still wins when you need Studio, professional voice cloning or seats, because the API sells generation and not those.
Which ElevenLabs plan is the best value?
For minutes alone, Pro at $99 and 600,000 credits gives the joint best credit rate on the ladder at $0.1650 per 1,000, matched by Business and beaten by neither Scale nor the smaller plans. There is no volume at which a plan beats the API on price per minute, because the plan rate is above the API rate on every tier. Pick a plan for Studio, professional voice cloning, seats or a predictable invoice, and pick the API for cost.
