Best AI Image Generators for Marketing Teams in 2026: What One Image Costs at Each Vendor, and the Nano Banana Google Retired on 2 October

One 1024x1024 AI image priced at five vendor rates, from $0.00588 to $0.21072

The short answer

If you run marketing or content for a business and you are choosing an image generator on a budget, the plan price tells you less than you think. We read every price in this article from the vendor’s own page, Google and OpenAI rates re-read on 26 September 2026, the rest on 21 September 2026. Four answers came out.

  • One square image costs from $0.00588 to $0.21072 at OpenAI, a 35.8x spread inside one model at one size, set only by the quality dial.
  • The model Google’s own AI answer calls the overall pick is retired on 2 October 2026. Its replacement makes the same 1024×1024 image for $0.0336, 13.8% less.
  • Buying Google’s model through Ideogram costs 5.13x what Google charges for it direct.
  • Midjourney’s $10 plan is not for companies over $1,000,000 of revenue. Its own rules require Pro at $60 a month or Mega at $120.

Every vendor’s price for one image, side by side

Six vendors bill six different units: GPU hours, output tokens, megapixels, generations and credits. The table keeps each in the unit the vendor sells and says so where no per-image price is published, rather than normalising them into one column the vendors never printed.

The model Google recommends first is retired on 2 October 2026

Google’s AI Mode, captured 21 September 2026 for the query “best ai image generators”, opens with The best AI image generator overall is Google’s Nano Banana (Gemini). Nano Banana is the consumer name of gemini-2.5-flash-image. Google’s own API pricing page, read again on 26 September 2026, says that model is deprecated and will be shut down on October 2, 2026. At the date of this read that was 6 days away.

ModelAlso sold asRate per 1M output tokens1024×1024 image4K image
Gemini 3 Pro ImageNano Banana Pro$120.001,120 tokens, $0.134$0.24
Gemini 3.1 Flash ImageNano Banana 2$60.001,120 tokens, $0.067$0.151
Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite ImageNano Banana 2 Lite$30.001,120 tokens, $0.0336not published
Gemini 2.5 Flash ImageNano Banana$30.001,290 tokens, $0.039not published
ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/pricing, read 26 September 2026.

Two things in this table matter for a budget. The replacement is cheaper, not dearer: Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image makes the same size image in 1,120 tokens against 1,290, $0.0336 against $0.039. And the same 1,120 tokens cost 4x as much on Gemini 3 Pro Image as on Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image, because only the rate differs. On Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, a 512px image is $0.045 and a 1024px image $0.067: four times the pixels for 1.5 times the price.

OpenAI publishes no per-image price, so we operated its calculator

OpenAI’s pricing page lists image output at $30.00 per million tokens and then says For image generation cost estimates, use the calculator in the image generation guide. We ran that calculator on 21 September 2026 at each quality setting rather than multiplying a guessed token count.

Quality1024×10241536×1024Wider image costs
low196 tokens, $0.00588158 tokens, $0.0047419.4% less

OpenAI image generation guide calculator, operated 21 September 2026. Token rate from developers.openai.com/api/docs/pricing, re-read 26 September 2026.

The quality dial moves the price 35.8x on one model at one size. And a 1536×1024 image, 1.5 times the pixels of a square one, costs fewer tokens at every quality we tested: 19.4% fewer at low and 21.9% fewer at high and max. For a team making landscape social or blog images, asking for the wide format is a saving, not a surcharge.

Adobe Firefly’s commercial-safety promise covers Adobe’s models, not the partner models it sells

Google’s AI Overview, captured 21 September 2026, describes Firefly as guaranteeing that generated content is commercially safe from copyright issues. Adobe’s own FAQ, read the same day, is narrower: Outputs from Adobe Firefly AI models are safe for commercial use, followed by You’re responsible for determining whether content generated by partner models is appropriate. The same plans page sells access to partner models from Google, OpenAI and Flux as a headline feature. Indemnity is narrower again, offered to eligible enterprise customers for IP indemnification for select Adobe Firefly outputs.

PlanMonthlyGenerative creditsPer 1,000 credits
Firefly Standard$9.992,000$5.00
Firefly Pro$19.994,000$5.00
Firefly Pro Plus$49.9910,000$5.00
Firefly Premium$199.9950,000$4.00
adobe.com/products/firefly/plans.html, read 21 September 2026 in a rendered browser, US pricing. Adobe does not publish credits per image on this page.

For a marketing team the practical rule is simple: if the image goes into paid work and legal cover matters, pick an Adobe model inside Firefly, not a partner model, and check whether your contract includes the indemnity. Volume buys nothing until the top plan, where the credit price falls 20%.

Ideogram: a 140x spread on one price list, and a Google model at 5.13x

Ideogram API endpointPer generation
P-Image Ideogram, Very Low 1K$0.003
4.0 Turbo$0.03
4.0 Default$0.06
4.0 Quality$0.10
3.0 Quality$0.09
3.0 Quality with Character Reference$0.20
Transparent 4.0 Quality 8K$0.42
Nano Banana (Gemini 2.5 Flash) via Ideogram$0.20
ideogram.ai/pricing, API tab, read 21 September 2026.

Ideogram charges $0.20 a generation for Nano Banana, Google’s gemini-2.5-flash-image. Google charges $0.039 for a 1024×1024 image from the same model, and set it to shut down on 2 October 2026. Character Reference on the 3.0 model more than doubles the price, $0.09 to $0.20. Plans run Plus $20, Pro $60 and Team $30 per user a month. Ideogram’s page shows the Plus plan at $15 in its comparison table at the same moment the plan card shows $20, because the two have separate billing toggles; $15 is the annual rate. Its credits-per-generation table did not load for us, so plan credits cannot be converted to images.

Black Forest Labs FLUX: the extra megapixel is 14x cheaper than the first

FLUX.2 modelFirst megapixelEach extra megapixel
FLUX.2 [max]$0.07$0.03
FLUX.2 [pro]$0.03$0.015
FLUX.2 [klein] 9B$0.015$0.002
FLUX.2 [klein] 4B$0.014$0.001
FLUX.2 [flex]$0.05$0.05
bfl.ai/pricing, FLUX.2 tab, read 25 September 2026. One megapixel is 1024×1024; output tops out at 4 MP.

On FLUX.2 [klein] 4B, a 4 megapixel image costs $0.017, 1.21 times the one megapixel price for four times the pixels. The same page bills the older FLUX.1 family per image instead, from $0.025 for FLUX.1 [dev] to $0.08 for Kontext [max], so a reader comparing the two tabs is comparing two units. FLUX.2 [klein] 4B is also the one FLUX.2 model released under Apache-2.0; our self-hosting guide covers when running it on your own GPU beats this API.

Midjourney: the $1,000,000 clause that moves the floor from $10 to $60

PlanMonthlyFast GPU hoursIncluded cost per GPU hour
Basic$10.003.3$3.03
Standard$30.0015$2.00
Pro$60.0030$2.00
Mega$120.0060$2.00
docs.midjourney.com, Comparing Midjourney Plans, read 25 September 2026. Cost per hour is our division of the two published numbers.

Midjourney sells GPU time, not images, and publishes no per-image price. Extra Fast time is $4.00 an hour on every plan, 1.32x the Basic plan’s included rate and 2.00x the others’. Annual billing takes 20% off. The line that decides the bill for a company, in Midjourney’s words: You must purchase the Pro or Mega plan above $1,000,000 USD of gross revenue a year. For that company the cheapest legal plan is $60 a month.

Three more plan ladders, read from the vendors

None of these three publishes credits per image on its pricing page, so we give the plan prices only.

  • Leonardo AI: Essential $12, Premium $30, Ultimate $60 a month, read 21 September 2026.
  • Krea: Basic $9, Pro $35, Max $105, Business $200 a month, read 21 September 2026.
  • Recraft: $10, $20, and $22 per seat a month, read 21 September 2026.

Which one fits a marketing team’s budget

  • High volume, lowest unit cost: OpenAI at low quality, $0.00588 a square image, or Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image at $0.0336. Both are API products; someone has to wire them in.
  • Large images on a budget: FLUX.2 [klein] 4B, $0.017 for 4 megapixels.
  • Legal cover for paid campaigns: Adobe Firefly, using Adobe’s own models only.
  • Heavy daily use on a flat fee: Midjourney Standard and up include unlimited Relax-mode images; a company over $1M revenue starts at Pro, $60.

We rank on published price and terms, not on image quality, which we did not measure for this article.

How we built this

Every price was read on the vendor’s own page in a rendered browser, monthly billing forced where a toggle exists. OpenAI figures come from operating its calculator. Google and OpenAI rates were re-read on 26 September 2026; Midjourney and Black Forest Labs on 25 September 2026; the rest on 21 September 2026. Anything a vendor does not publish is marked “not published”. Figures quoted by Google’s AI answers that trace to no vendor page were cut.

Questions people ask about AI image generators

Is there a 100% free AI image generator?

Ideogram lists a $0 plan and Adobe advertises a free Firefly tier, both with usage limits. The only route with no per-image charge is running an Apache-2.0 model such as FLUX.2 [klein] 4B on your own hardware, which moves the cost to the GPU. Every paid option in this article publishes a price above zero.

Is ChatGPT the best image generator?

On price it is the widest range we measured: $0.00588 to $0.21072 for one 1024×1024 image through the API, 35.8x, set by the quality setting. We did not measure image quality, so we do not rank it on output.

What AI is better than ChatGPT for image creation?

For cost per image through an API, Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image at $0.0336 and FLUX.2 [klein] 4B at $0.014 both undercut OpenAI’s medium setting of $0.01317. For commercial legal cover, Adobe Firefly’s own models. Prices read 26 September 2026.

Is Nano Banana being discontinued?

The original one, yes. Google’s pricing page, read 26 September 2026, says gemini-2.5-flash-image will be shut down on 2 October 2026. Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro were not on that notice, and Nano Banana 2 Lite makes the same size image for $0.0336.

How much does Midjourney cost per image?

Midjourney does not publish a per-image price. It sells Fast GPU time, from 3.3 hours on the $10 Basic plan to 60 hours on the $120 Mega plan, with extra time at $4.00 an hour.
