The short answer
A solo founder can run a working AI stack for $0 a month: ChatGPT for chat and drafting, NotebookLM for research over your own files, Gamma for slides, Canva for graphics, Leonardo AI for images, GitHub Copilot for code and Make for automation. Each free plan has a hard edge, and we read every one on the vendor’s own page on 14 October 2026. When all six of the paid-for jobs outgrow their free plan, the first paid step on each costs $58.99 a month ($707.88 a year), or $53.99 a month where the vendor offers annual billing. That is the bill the $0 stack defers.
| Job | Free tool | Where the free plan stops | First paid step | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chat and drafting | ChatGPT | unlimited text chats; uploads and images “Limited” | Go | $8 |
| Research over your own files | NotebookLM | 100 notebooks, 50 sources each | Google AI Plus | $4.99 |
| Slide decks | Gamma | 400 credits once, at signup | Plus, billed monthly | $12 |
| Graphics and social posts | Canva | 20 AI uses | Pro, US$144 a year | $12 |
| Images | Leonardo AI | 150 tokens a day, creations public | Essential, billed monthly | $12 |
| Code | GitHub Copilot | 2,000 completions a month | Pro | $10 |
| Automation | Make | 1,000 credits a month | paid prices did not load | not included |
| Total | $58.99 |
For context, Google’s AI Mode for this query cites a video saying seven free tools replace “over $200 in monthly subscriptions”. On the vendors’ own price lists, the first paid step for six of those jobs is $58.99. The bigger bill only arrives if you jump straight to the $20 plans: ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro are both $20 a month billed monthly.
Where each free plan stops
“Free” covers three different deals, and the difference decides when you start paying.
- A daily or monthly allowance that refills: Leonardo AI (150 Fast Tokens a day), Make (1,000 credits a month), GitHub Copilot Free (2,000 completions a month plus an allowance of AI credits), Gemini CLI (up to 1,000 model requests a day with a Google account).
- A one-time grant that does not refill: Gamma gives 400 credits at signup. Its Plus plan is the first to list 1,000 monthly credits.
- No published number at all: ChatGPT Free promises unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards, with uploads, image creation and voice marked “Limited”. Claude Free says there is “no fixed message count” and resets usage on a rolling five-hour window. Gemini Free says “Standard limits”.
| Free plan | The limit, as published | What else is capped | First paid step |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Free | unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse safeguards | uploads, image creation, voice, deep research: “Limited” | Go $8 (may include ads), Plus $20 |
| Claude Free | no fixed message count; resets every 5 hours | not itemised on the pricing page | Pro $20 monthly, $17 a month billed annually |
| Gemini Free | “Standard limits”, Flash-Lite model | 32k-token context window | Google AI Plus $4.99 (2x usage), AI Pro $19.99 (4x) |
| NotebookLM Free | 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook | up to 500,000 words per source | Google AI Plus $4.99 |
| Gamma Free | 400 credits at signup, once | up to 10 slides per prompt | Plus $12 monthly, $9 billed annually |
| Canva Free | up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses | design tools stay free | Pro US$144 a year, 10x the AI uses |
| Leonardo AI Free | 150 Fast Tokens a day | creations are public | Essential $12 monthly, $10 yearly, 8,500 tokens a month |
| Make Free | 1,000 credits a month | most actions use 1 credit | not read |
| GitHub Copilot Free | 2,000 completions a month | Auto model selection only; limited agents | Pro $10 with 1,000 base credits |
| Gemini CLI | 1,000 requests a day (Google account) | 250 a day, 10 a minute on an unpaid API key | not priced on the page read |
| Google AI Studio | free in all available countries | lower API rate limits for testing | not priced on the page read |
The three free assistants, side by side
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are all $0 to start and none publishes a message count on its free plan. What does differ is the step up. Gemini has the cheapest one: Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month for 2x the free usage. ChatGPT Go is $8 and OpenAI notes it “may include ads”. ChatGPT Plus and Claude Pro sit at $20 billed monthly; Claude Pro drops to $17 a month if you prepay $200 for the year.
One detail worth knowing before you build on ChatGPT Free: OpenAI’s own pages disagreed on the model on 14 October 2026. The Free tier FAQ says free users get GPT-5.6 Luna; the pricing page’s Free card says unlimited text chats with GPT-6. Gemini Free is the only one of the three to print a context window, 32k tokens, which caps how much of a long document it reads in one go. For that job, NotebookLM is the free tool built for it.
For builders: three free tiers with real numbers
If you write code, Google publishes the most generous free numbers we found. Gemini CLI allows up to 1,000 model requests a day when you sign in with a Google account, or 250 a day at 10 a minute on an unpaid API key. Google AI Studio is free to use in every country where it is available, with lower API rate limits meant for testing. GitHub Copilot Free caps inline suggestions at 2,000 completions a month and picks the model for you; Pro is $10 a month. For team pricing, see AI coding assistant pricing for a 5-developer team.

Which free plan to start with
- You write and research all day: ChatGPT or Claude Free for drafting, NotebookLM for anything that starts from your own documents. First upgrade worth testing: Google AI Plus at $4.99, which covers both Gemini and Gemini Notebook.
- You sell with decks and social posts: Canva Free for graphics, Gamma for slides. Gamma’s 400 credits do not refill, so plan on Plus at $12 once you pitch weekly. Open Canva Free.
- You ship code: Gemini CLI’s 1,000 requests a day is the largest free allowance on this list; Copilot Free covers 2,000 completions a month.
- You want images you can keep private: Leonardo’s free creations are public, so client work means Essential at $12.
If you would rather own the tools than rent them, our open source alternatives guide prices the self-hosted route, and the LLM break-even math shows when running your own model beats paying per token.
How we checked
On 14 October 2026 we opened each vendor’s pricing page, plus OpenAI’s free tier FAQ, Google’s Gemini help page and GitHub’s Copilot docs, in a rendered browser, clicked each monthly or yearly toggle by its own label, and saved the text of every state. Every number in this article is quoted from those saved pages, and a script fails the build if a quoted string is missing. The upgrade total is our arithmetic on those list prices. We did not sign up for any paid plan or test output quality, and we did not use our own catalogue’s free-tier flags, because a spot check found several out of date. This is a price and limits check, not a quality ranking.
Questions people ask about free AI tools

We did not test quality. On price, ChatGPT Free gives unlimited everyday text chats subject to abuse safeguards, and its paid plans start at Go $8 and Plus $20 a month. Claude Pro costs the same $20.
Which free AI works for coding in 2026?
On published limits, Gemini CLI: up to 1,000 model requests a day with a Google account. GitHub Copilot Free allows 2,000 completions a month with Auto model selection. Checked 14 October 2026.
How much does it cost when free AI tools run out?
