The short answer
Short answer, prices read on 24 October 2026: a 10-person team on Perplexity Enterprise Pro pays $340 a month ($34 a seat, billed annually). The same team can run Vane, the MIT-licensed answer engine formerly called Perplexica, with its bundled SearXNG search on one Hostinger KVM 2 server for $13.19 a month including Claude Haiku 5.5 tokens for 4,400 answers, or $19.39 once the server renews. That avoids $320.61 a month, $3,847.32 a year. Moving the answers up to Sonnet 5.5 and paying Brave for search results still lands at $119.99. What the money does not buy is Perplexity’s compliance paperwork, SSO and its premium data sources.
| Option | What you pay for | 10 people, a month |
|---|---|---|
| Perplexity Enterprise Pro | $34 a seat, billed annually | $340 |
| Perplexity Pro (individual plan) | $17 a person, billed annually, listed under Individual | $170 |
| Vane on KVM 2, Sonnet 5.5, Brave Search API | Server, $0.02 of tokens an answer, $5 per 1,000 searches after $5 free | $113.79 promotional, $119.99 at renewal |
| Vane on KVM 2, Sonnet 5.5, bundled SearXNG | Server, $0.02 of tokens an answer, search $0 | $96.79 promotional, $102.99 at renewal |
| Vane on Hostinger KVM 2, Haiku 5.5, bundled SearXNG Our pick | Server, $0.00 of tokens an answer, search $0 | $13.19 promotional, $19.39 at renewal |
Our pick means we earn a commission if you buy through our link. Hostinger is our pick for the server because it is the host we already price across our self-hosting guides; its KVM 2 plan (2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 100 GB NVMe) is $8.79 a month on a Black Friday promotion and renews at $14.99. Our editor score for Hostinger is 1.9 out of 10, unchanged by the commission. See Hostinger VPS plans.
What a Perplexity seat costs in 2026
Perplexity’s pricing page shows every paid plan as a monthly figure “when billed annually”. On 24 October 2026:
| Plan | Price | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Search only, citations in every answer, basic models |
| Pro | $17 a month | Deep research, choice of top models, 4,000 bonus credits |
| Max | $167 a month | Frontier models, 10,000 monthly credits, highest limits |
| Enterprise Pro | $34 a seat a month | SSO, SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR and PCI DSS, premium sources from PitchBook and Statista, 500 Computer credits a seat |
| Enterprise Max | $271 a seat a month | 15,000 Computer credits a seat, SCIM, audit logs, data retention settings |
For a team, Enterprise Pro is the realistic comparison: Pro sits on the Individual tab, while user permissions and SSO are Enterprise features. Ten Enterprise Pro seats are $340 a month, $4,080 a year paid up front. Put another way, one seat’s $34 buys 1,700 Sonnet 5.5 answers a month at our token assumption, more than three times the 440 a heavy user asks.
The three layers of a self-hosted Perplexity
Every open source alternative is the same three parts glued together, and each part has its own bill:
- Search. SearXNG is a metasearch engine (AGPL-3.0, 38,808 stars) that aggregates results from up to 261 search services and costs nothing per query. The paid alternatives are search APIs: the Brave Search API at $5 per 1,000 requests with $5 of free credit a month, the Perplexity Search API at $5 per 1,000 requests, or Tavily at $0.008 a credit with 1,000 free credits a month.
- The answer engine. The app your team opens: it sends the question to search, reads the results and asks a model to write a cited answer. Vane, Morphic and Open WebUI are the three we price below.
- The model. Either a cloud API billed per token, or a local model through Ollama. We price the API route: Claude Haiku 5.5 is $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output; Sonnet 5.5 is $2 and $10.
The search layer is where the self-hosted route can quietly degrade. SearXNG’s own documentation warns that an instance without proper protection can cause search services “to enforce CAPTCHAs or to ban the IP address of the instance”, which means fewer results. Keep your instance private (behind a VPN or login) and budget a paid search API as the fallback: at one request an answer, the Brave Search API adds $17 a month for 4,400 answers, $61 if each answer runs three searches.
The open source answer engines, checked on GitHub on 24 October 2026
| Project | Licence | Stars | Search out of the box | Catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open WebUI | Open WebUI License (BSD-3 to v0.6.5) | 156,654 | DuckDuckGo with no configuration; SearXNG, Brave, Tavily and others by key | A chat app first; over 50 users you must keep its branding |
| Vane (formerly Perplexica) | MIT | 37,706 | SearXNG bundled in the same container | Last push 2026-09-01; Tavily and Exa support listed as coming soon |
| Khoj | AGPL-3.0 | 37,811 | Web or your own documents | AGPL; a second-brain app as much as a search engine |
| Scira | AGPL-3.0 | 11,907 | Exa, Firecrawl, Parallel, Tavily | Exa key required for web search, so search is never free |
| Morphic | Apache-2.0 | 9,194 | SearXNG in its Docker Compose stack; Tavily, Brave, Exa by key | Compose also runs PostgreSQL and Redis |
| MindSearch | Apache-2.0 | 6,946 | Multi-agent web search | No push since 2025-07-04 |
Vane is the closest copy of Perplexity and the cheapest to run. One docker command starts it, and its README says the image “includes both Vane and SearxNG, so no additional setup is required”. It connects to Ollama locally or to OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini and Groq, and it has Speed, Balanced and Quality modes; Quality runs deeper research, so expect more searches and tokens an answer there than our one-search scenario. Its deploy templates still use the old name, Perplexica, which is the name Google’s AI Overview leads with.
Morphic is the pick if you want accounts and history in a real database. Its Docker Compose file “starts PostgreSQL, Redis, SearXNG, and Morphic automatically”, with no search API key needed, and it can switch to Tavily, Brave or Exa. That is more moving parts on the same server, under the Apache-2.0 licence.
Open WebUI is the pick if your team also wants a private ChatGPT. Web search works out of the box through DuckDuckGo, and it can use SearXNG or a paid provider instead. It is the most starred project here by a wide margin, but it is a chat interface with search added, not a search engine. Its licence lets internal deployments of 50 or fewer users rebrand; above that, keep the branding. We price it in full in Open WebUI vs LibreChat vs AnythingLLM.
The bill for 10 people, line by line
Our scenario is 10 people, 20 answers each a workday, 22 workdays: 4,400 answers a month, each one 6,000 input tokens (the question plus the search results) and 800 output tokens. Change any of those and the token line scales with it; the server line does not.
| Line | Haiku 5.5 answers | Sonnet 5.5 answers |
|---|---|---|
| Tokens an answer | $0.00 | $0.02 |
| Tokens for 4,400 answers | $4.40 | $88 |
| Search, bundled SearXNG | $0 | $0 |
| Search, Brave API, 1 request an answer | $17 | $17 |
| Server, Hostinger KVM 2 | $8.79 ($14.99 at renewal) | $8.79 ($14.99 at renewal) |
| Total with SearXNG, at renewal | $19.39 | $102.99 |
| Total with Brave, at renewal | $36.39 | $119.99 |
| Saved against 10 Enterprise Pro seats ($340) | $320.61 | $237.01 |
Two cheaper-looking routes are worth knowing about and not worth taking for this job. Claude’s own web search tool is $10 per 1,000 searches plus tokens, $44 a month at 4,400 searches, more than double Brave. And a local model through Ollama removes the token line, but a 2-vCPU server is not where you want to run one; the hardware maths is in Self-hosting an LLM against paying per token: the break-even.
We priced KVM 2 because none of the READMEs we read publishes a minimum server size and this stack runs no local model. If you add Ollama, or want room for Morphic’s database, KVM 4 (4 vCPU, 16 GB RAM) is $12.99 a month on the same promotion and $28.99 at renewal, and the totals above rise by the difference.
See Hostinger VPS plans. Prices are a Black Friday promotion on 24 October 2026; check the renewal line before you buy.
When Perplexity is still the right buy
- You need the paperwork. Enterprise Pro lists SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, GDPR and PCI DSS compliance and SSO. A server you run yourself has the compliance status you give it.
- You need the premium sources. Enterprise Pro cites PitchBook and Statista. SearXNG searches the open web only.
- Nobody owns the server. Every self-hosted total above excludes engineer time. If an hour a month of someone’s time costs more than the gap, buy the seats.
- You use Computer. Enterprise Pro includes 500 Computer credits a seat a month; none of the open source projects here replaces that agent.
How we checked
Every price, limit and licence on this page was read on the vendor’s own page in a rendered browser on 24 October 2026: Perplexity’s pricing page (both tabs) and API pricing, the Brave Search API and Tavily pricing pages, Claude’s API pricing and Hostinger’s VPS page. Licences, stars and last-push dates come from the GitHub REST API the same day, and setup claims from each project’s README and the SearXNG and Open WebUI docs. All 68 facts are logged with the exact quote and evidence file. The scenario, token counts and totals are our arithmetic. We did not run these engines side by side, so this is a price and licence check, not an answer-quality test.
Questions people ask about self-hosted Perplexity alternatives
What is a good alternative to Perplexity AI?
For a team that can run a server, Vane (formerly Perplexica) is the closest open source copy: MIT licensed, 37,706 GitHub stars, SearXNG search bundled in one container. Morphic (Apache-2.0) and Open WebUI are the other two we priced. Read 24 October 2026.
Can I host Perplexity locally?
Not Perplexity itself; it is a hosted service. You can host an open source equivalent: Vane, Morphic or Open WebUI for the interface, SearXNG for search, and either a local model through Ollama or a cloud API for the answers.
Is anyone still using Perplexity?
Perplexity’s pricing page says 50,000+ organizations use Perplexity Enterprise. That is the vendor’s own claim, read on 24 October 2026; we could not check it independently.
What are some self-hosted AI tools available?
For AI search: Vane, Morphic, Open WebUI, Khoj, Scira and MindSearch, all on GitHub. For the model layer, Ollama runs open models locally. Our guide to open source alternatives to paid AI tools covers chat, voice and automation as well.
How much does a self-hosted Perplexity alternative cost a month?
For 10 people asking 20 questions a workday, about $13.19 on a Hostinger KVM 2 with Claude Haiku 5.5 tokens and bundled SearXNG ($19.39 at renewal), or $119.99 with Sonnet 5.5 and the Brave Search API. Ten Perplexity Enterprise Pro seats are $340.
How much is Perplexity Enterprise Pro?
$34 a seat a month when billed annually, read 24 October 2026. Enterprise Max is $271 a seat. The pricing page shows no monthly-billing price.
Is SearXNG free to use with an AI search engine?
Yes, it costs nothing per query and is AGPL-3.0 licensed. Its docs warn that an unprotected instance can get CAPTCHAs or an IP ban from the search services it queries, so keep it private and have a paid search API as a fallback.
