ChatGPT Alternatives With a Free Plan in 2026: What 8 Assistants Publish About Their Limits, and the $4.99 to $20 a Month a Freelancer Pays When Free Runs Out

Free ChatGPT alternatives, read 15 October 2026: the first paid step on Gemini, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Mistral Vibe, Claude and Perplexity, from $4.99 to $20 a month, and the yearly saving against ChatGPT Plus

The short answer

If you are a freelancer or a small-business owner trying not to pay $20 a month for ChatGPT Plus, seven assistants give you a free plan to start on: Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Mistral Vibe, Duck.ai and ChatGPT‘s own Free tier, with DeepSeek‘s pay-per-token API as an eighth route. We read every vendor’s own page on 15 October 2026. The finding: almost none of them publishes a number for its free limit. What they do publish is the price of the next step, and that runs from $4.99 a month (Google AI Plus) to $20. Stepping up to Google AI Plus instead of ChatGPT Plus saves $180.12 a year.

Read 15 October 2026 on each vendor’s pricing page. Claude and Perplexity yearly figures are their annual-billing prices (Claude: $200 up front; Perplexity: $17 a month billed annually). Microsoft 365 Personal also includes the Microsoft 365 apps. Duck.ai’s paid plan price is not on its help page, so it is left out.

What each free plan actually promises

The query people type is “ChatGPT alternatives free”, and the honest answer to “how much free” is that only Google prints hard numbers. Everyone else describes the free plan in words.

Read 15 October 2026. Quoted text is the vendor’s own. Where a vendor publishes no number, we print none.

Two of the eight reset on a clock you can plan around: Claude’s five-hour session window and Gemini’s five-hour refresh. Google also says its Gemini app limits are “compute-based”: they weigh the complexity of your prompt, the features you use and the length of your chat. A long chat with file uploads uses the free allowance faster than a short text question.

Where Google’s answer does not match the vendor’s page

We captured Google’s AI Overview and AI Mode for “chatgpt alternatives 2026 free” on 12 October 2026 and checked each claim against the vendor’s own page on 15 October 2026.

Google saysThe vendor’s page says
AI Overview: DuckDuckGo AI Chat runs “GPT-4o mini, Claude Haiku, or Llama”Duck.ai’s help page lists GPT-5.4 mini, GPT-5.4 nano, Claude Haiku 4.5, GPT-oss 120B, Gemma 4 31B and Mistral Small 4 as free. GPT-4o mini and Llama are not on it
AI Overview: Gemini Free has “deep integration with Google apps like Docs and Gmail”“Gemini in Gmail, Vids, and more” sits in the Google AI Plus card ($4.99 a month), not Free
AI Overview: Copilot Free offers “DALL-E image generation”Microsoft’s pages confirm image creation on Free with lower usage than paid; neither page names DALL-E
AI Overview: DeepSeek is free with “a massive context window”The 1M-token context is on DeepSeek’s paid API page; the free chat app’s limits are not published there
AI Overview and AI Mode: Claude and Gemini have generous free tiersAnthropic publishes no message count. Google publishes “Standard limits” and a 32k-token context window
AI Overview: Perplexity is a free AI search engineThe Pro page prices Pro at $17 a month billed annually and states no Free quota

One more mismatch sits inside OpenAI itself. On 15 October 2026 the ChatGPT Free tier FAQ says free users get GPT-5.6 Luna, while the Free card on chatgpt.com/pricing says “Unlimited text chats with GPT-6”. And on Google’s side, the newest model on its own page, Gemini 4 Argon, is offered on AI Pro and AI Ultra only; Free runs “our Flash-Lite model”.

Duck.ai

DuckDuckGo says Duck.ai “is free to use, but there is a daily limit on usage”, and that subscribers on its Plus plan get higher limits, with Pro at 2x Plus. Which one to start with, by job

  • You live in Gmail and Google Docs: Gemini Free for chat, then Google AI Plus at $4.99 once you want Gemini inside Gmail. That is $180.12 a year under ChatGPT Plus.
  • You already pay for Microsoft 365, or want Word and Excel anyway: Copilot Free, then Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99 a month, which bundles Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and 1 TB of storage with higher Copilot usage.
  • You write long documents in one sitting: Claude Free resets on a five-hour window; Pro is $17 a month if you prepay the year. Gemini Free’s 32k-token context caps how much text it reads at once.
  • You want to stay on ChatGPT for less: Go at $8 a month, $12 under Plus, if ads are acceptable.
  • You only need a quick answer now and then: Duck.ai, within its daily limit, with free models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Mistral.
  • You are building a product, not chatting: DeepSeek’s API at $0.75 per million tokens in and out off-peak. For the self-hosted route, see the LLM break-even math.

How we checked

On 15 October 2026 we opened each vendor’s pricing page and help pages in a rendered browser, clicked each monthly or yearly toggle by its own label, and saved the text of every state. Every number and quote in this article comes from those saved pages, and a script fails the build if a quoted string is missing. Yearly costs and savings are our arithmetic on those list prices. We did not sign up for any paid plan and did not test answer quality, so this is a limits and price check, not a quality ranking. Pages we could not read, or that printed no number, are left out rather than estimated.

Questions people ask about free ChatGPT alternatives

Is there anything better than ChatGPT that’s free?

We did not test answer quality, so we will not call one better. On published terms, Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Mistral Vibe and Duck.ai all have free plans, and none publishes a message count except through descriptions like “Standard limits”. Checked 15 October 2026.

Which AI is 100% free?

None of the eight we read offers unlimited everything. Duck.ai, which needs no account, still has a daily limit, and ChatGPT Free limits uploads, images and voice separately from its unlimited text chats.

What are the top 10 alternatives to ChatGPT?

We priced eight routes from their vendors’ own pages: Claude, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Mistral Vibe, Duck.ai, DeepSeek’s API and ChatGPT’s own Go plan. Others named in search results, such as Qwen, Meta AI and Grok, are left out until we read their pages.

Which AI is the most unrestricted?

Vendor pages do not rank that, and we cannot answer it from them. On usage, no free plan we read publishes an unlimited allowance beyond ChatGPT’s everyday text chats, which are subject to abuse safeguards.

What is the cheapest paid plan if a free plan runs out?

Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, with 2x the Gemini Free usage. Next are ChatGPT Go at $8 and Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99. Read 15 October 2026.

Does Claude Free have a message limit?

Anthropic says there is “no fixed message count”. Usage resets on a rolling five-hour session window, and Pro gives at least 5x the Free usage per session.

Is ChatGPT Go worth it over Plus?

On price, Go is $8 a month against $20 for Plus, $144 a year less. OpenAI notes Go may include ads, and Plus adds advanced reasoning with GPT-6, projects and custom GPTs.
